An image aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between its width and height. Written as two numbers separated by a colon (e.g. 16:9 or 4:3), it specifies the overall rectangular shape of a photo regardless of whether the physical resolution is 320×180 px or 3840×2160 px.
To calculate the aspect ratio, divide the pixel width by the pixel height. For simplified whole numbers, divide both dimensions by their Greatest Common Divisor (GCD):
Aspect Ratio = (Width ÷ GCD) : (Height ÷ GCD)
Example: 1920 × 1080 px (GCD = 120) → 16:9 (Decimal: 1.78 : 1)
